Pine County Board Freezes Hiring/Salaries; Montbriand New Chair

District Two commissioner Ed Montbriand was appointed county Chairman for the 2009 year. Doug Carlson will serve as the Vice Chairman. Due in part to the Minnesota economic forecast released in early December, cities and counties throughout the state are searching for ways to save money and are cutting back. On Tuesday, the Pine County Board agreed to hiring and salary freezes.

The two top teams in the Great River Conference last year met for the first time this year in Pine City, Tuesday, but it was anything but one of the epic duals from a year ago. In a game heard on 100.9 WCMP-FM, Braham gets the big road win over Pine City, 74-52. It was a much more competitive game during the Grantsburg-Webster boys match-up heard on Classic Hits 105.7 WXCX, but in the end the Tigers sneak by the Pirates 57-50.

Representative Tim Faust, Mora, and the rest of the Minnesota legislature reconvened Tuesday for the beginning of the session. The state is facing a $4.8 billion deficit in the two year budget cycle. Faust stopped by the Red Rock Radio studios Tuesday morning to discuss the session.

Federal Funds on the way for Isanti Food and Shelter Programs

The Phase 27 Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program in Isanti County is receiving $35,606 in federal funds to supplement existing emergency food and shelter programs in the area.

[Update] Charges Filed in New Years Day Stabbing

The two individuals accused of an alleged stabbing New Years Day in Sandstone appeared in Pine County Court for the first time, Monday afternoon. Teri LaSarge, 20, from Sandstone faces a pair of assault charges. She faces one count of first degree and second degree assault. Bond is set at $100,000. Dain Quick, 23, from Pine City faces aiding an offender and firearm alteration of serial number charges. Bond is set at $10,000.
