There is no place like Siren, Wisconsin to celebrate America’s Independence Day, says Bed Races co-coordinator Peggy Strabel. A busy day scheduled Saturday in the northwest Wisconsin city, but the highlights are the bed races and parade. Strabel says the bed races are an event like none other.

Large Turnouts Expected at Annual Boat Parade

Boats will line the waters of Pine City this weekend for the Cross Lake Association Annual Boat Parade. Last year, 35 boats were decorated in red, white, and blue for the fourth of July. Eddie Wilbert, who is one of the parade coordinators, expects an even greater turnout this year.

Library Preparing For Future Changes

Pine City is preparing for a potential expansion or relocation of the library. The city council agreed to hire Gayle Mack of SEH as the architect for rebuilding the library. Mack will be responsible for fundraising and designing the concepts for the new building. The library board will pay Mack $75,000 for her services, which council and library board member Brian Scholin says is budgeted. Scholin adds that Mack seems like the right fit for the job.

Special Meeting Planned For Jail Offer

Pine City is holding a special meeting to discuss to possibility of moving city hall to the old county jail. Last month, The Pine County board agreed to offer the city the facility for $200,000. The city now has until August 21st to respond to the offer. If a purchasing agreement is not done by then, the jail will go on the open market. The council agreed to come up with a plan for spatial needs before making a final decision. City Council member Brian Scholin.

Street Reconstruction Delayed A Year

The 2009 Street Reconstruction projects in Pine City are going to have to wait a year. City Engineer Sean Clark broke the news to the city council at Wednesday’s monthly meeting. Clark says because of the amount of request for stimulus money, there is a delay in the review from Rural Development, which has pushed the project back.
