The Grantsburg Pirates volleyball team is just one win away from returning to State. On Thursday night, the Pirates defeated the Cameron Comets -in Cameron- in a Sectional Semifinal. It was a victory in four sets: 25-23 25-14 17-25 25-15
In set one, Grantsburg fell behind 6-0 and trailed throughout, tying it at 13-13 but then falling behind again. They finally tied it up back 23-23, and went on to win set by gutting out the final two exciting points.
Grantsburg dominated set number 2, jumping out 9-1 to start and never looking back. They won the set going away and seemed to be in total control.
The Comets wouldn’t go quietly though, and Cameron really tightened up their defense by making some incredible digs to keep plays alive. The eight point victory for Cameron had Grantsburg fans beginning to sweat.
In the fourth set, Grantsburg fell behind early but turned it on about halfway through the set, eventually finishing the Comets off with a ten point win. To earn a return trip to State, the Pirates need to win Saturday night’s Section Final against a familiar Regis squad. Its actually a rematch of last year’s final where Grantsburg defeated the Ramblers in straight in what would end up being the seasons final win.
