The Iowa caucus is less than a week away; it’s the first caucus in the nation, and will officially signal the beginning of the final push for republican candidates to earn the right to go up against president Obama. In news out of Iowa Wednesday, Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s struggling presidential campaign saw her Iowa chairman defect to rival Ron Paul’s side.

The military is reporting that an Army medic from Marshfield has died in Afghanistan of injuries suffered in an insurgent attack. The Defense Department said Tuesday that 27-year-old Staff Sgt. In Pine County, charges have been filed against the man accused of operating a large marijuana grow out of a commercial building in Askov. Keith Kevin Carlson faces two charges stemming from his arrest on Nov. 29 after the Pine County SWAT team raided a hidden room in the building and discovered 187 marijuana plants in various stages of growth. The two counts, for possession and sale of marijuana, carry penalties of up to 40 years in prison and $500,000 in fines.

After eleven hours of debate, The Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus has elected Sen. David Senjem of Rochester to act as the new Senate Majority Leader. Senjem replaces Sen. Amy Koch, who recently resigned after admitting a scandalous relationship with a Senate staffer.

In a bizarre development, Daniel Schlienz, the suspected gunman in the Cook County Courthouse shooting, has died. Since the shooting, Schlienz was being held in the St. Louis County jail in Duluth, but an autopsy has been performed and the cause of death is currently undetermined.
