Burning restrictions remain in effect for 37 counties

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reminds people that open burning restrictions remain in effect for 37 counties until adequate precipitation and green-up of vegetation occurs.Last weekend’s rain provided relief for weary firefighters, but did not significantly reduce the threat of wildfires. The northern one-third of the state remains in a moderate drought.

Hecht Sentenced to Three Years in Prison for Shooting

Corey HechtA Braham man described by friends and family as a loving, compassionate father was sentenced to 36 months in prison. Corey Hecht, 32, was sentenced Friday in Pine County court for shooting his friend after an argument escalated in October.

Hecht pleaded guilty in March to second degree assault. He shot Jeffrey Huebner twice after the two got into a heated argument over what police say started over which branch of the military is best.

Huebner’s aunt, Barbara Steiner, doesn’t think the plea deal and sentence for Hecht goes far enough.

Heckel Appears in Court, Posts Bail

scottheckelScott Heckel made his first appearance in Pine County Court, Tuesday, for a New Year’s Day crash that killed two Pine City residents. Heckel, 44, is charged with twelve counts in the case including six for criminal vehicular homicide and three for criminal vehicular operation causing bodily harm. Conditional bail was set at $25,000. According to court records, Heckel posted bail. He is due back is court on June 29th.

Pine City Preparing for Special Concert

terrypTwin Cities based freelance jazz musician Terry Peffer will by appearing in a free concert on Monday, May 3 in Pine City as part of the band’s annual Pops Spectacular. Peffer will play a stunning arrangement of “Georgia on My Mind” with the Concert Band, as well as several tunes with Pine City’s Jazz One, including an original composition, “Jumpin’ and Swingin’.”

Director Brad Mariska and band members Joe Wolf and Bay Pangerl talked about the upcoming performance on the WCMP Morning Show.

Snyder Posts $50K, Released from Custody

Waylon SnyderA Hinckley man accused of felony criminal vehicular homicide is free after posting $50,000 bail. Waylon Snyder, 21, appeared in Pine County court Thursday. He is charged with ten counts, nine for criminal vehicular homicide for the May, 2009 car fire that resulted in the death of Agnes Mattinas.

Cambridge Crash Victims’ Families and Friends Gather to Remember

Funeral Services for four of the victims of a Sunday morning crash in Cambridge will take place Thursday. Travis Gryczkowski, 21, Kelsee Blackledge, 15, Travis Buchan, 17, and Tres (Tray) Kendryna-Whitefeather, 16, will be laid to rest this afternoon. They are four of six people killed in the head-on collision.
