A prominent independent Iranian lawyer, Masoud Shafii, will represent the three American hikers detained in Iran and work for their release, their families said Sunday. The families’ decision follows statements reported in the media from Iranian officials that the three friends – Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal – could face trial on unspecified charges. However, multiple media reports indicate the three will be charged with espionage. Bauer is a native of Onamia, MN and his mother Cindy Hickey lives in Pine City.
Four people were injured in a three car crash Christmas day in Isanti County. Authorities say none of the injuries are life threatening. The accident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at Highway 65 and 379th Avenue.

Residents of East Central Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin who wished for a white Christmas were granted an early present. The area was pounded with snow Wednesday night and Thursday morning. As many as 16 inches is expected to fall by Saturday. The region remains under a winter storm warning. East to Northeast winds will increase to 15-25 mph.
The Wisconsin court of appeals rejected an appeal from a Webster man convicted of first degree murder. Clint Mosay argued that his actions were caused by mental disease and he lacked the substantial capacity at the time of the July 17, 2005 murder of Ranell Johnson.
Pine County Public Health announced four more H1n1 vaccination clinic that will take place in January.
