The federal government is on a spending spree and the state of Wisconsin is poised to be a big beneficiary. With Wisconsin facing a $5.9 billion budget shortfall, the Governor’s two-year budget proposal increases taxes by $1.5 billion while increasing total state spending by nearly 10%. It is estimated that the state of Wisconsin will receive over $3.7 billion in new allocations from the federal government as part of the recently passed stimulus bill.

Fans will wear pink t-shirts and Pine City players will wear pink shoelaces, at Friday’s game against Mora in Pine City, in support of cancer research and awareness. All the money raised from the shirts sold for Friday’s game will go to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.

MADISON – Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman announced today that Wisconsin’s unemployment rate for January was 7.6 percent, up 1.8 percentage points from December’s 5.8 percent.

Scott Lange, 42, is going back to prison. Lange is the man who killed former Pine County Deputy Mike Morrow in 1991. He pleaded guilty, Thursday, to assaulting his daughter at a Cambridge home in November.

Beds are already filled at the Black Dog Hill Shelter that opened, Wednesday, in Cambridge. Three people are already staying at the shelter which currently has only three beds. There is a need for beds and other supplies.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Pine and Burnett counties until Midnight. Five to eight issues of snow is predicted in Pine City, Hinckley, Shell Lake and surrounding areas.
