Two people are under arrest after authorities discovered a package full of marijuana sent through the mail to a Harris residence. The package contained 13-pounds of marijuana, which authorities say is worth about $24,000.

The Kanabec County Sheriff’s Office reports a series of fraudulent phone calls are targeting elderly citizens in the area. The calls are coming from Canada and say the grandchildren of the local residents are in jail and need bail money.

Derek Marihart, 19, is due in Pine County court Thursday for sentencing. Marihart is one of four teens arrested in October for burglary of several local bars. He and Kaitlyn Nosbush,18, both pleaded guilty. The cases of Spencer Knutson and Michael Schouveller are still pending.

The Pine City Dragons boys basketball team tasted sweet revenge Tuesday at home. The Dragons top Rush City 67-53, a month and a half after a last second lost to the Tigers on the road. Brian Shuey scored 18 for Pine City and Justin Carlson chipped in 12 off the bunch. Justin Bosman led to Tigers with 18. Pine City improves to 6-7 and 6-3 in the Great River Conference. The Tigers falls to 7-4 and 5-2 in the conference.

During the fall of 2008 many greater Braham area residents attended study circles through the Horizon’s Program of the U of M Extension Service to identify issues of poverty and to propose long term and short term ideas that could address some of the challenges. These ideas were the focus of discussion and planning at a meeting on January 24.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar announced that key investments in high speed internet that she pushed for were included by the Senate Appropriations Committee in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The legislation includes nearly $9 billion to strengthen the nation’s high speed internet infrastructure and will help deliver the technologies that can create new jobs and opportunities in rural America.

The Finlayson Community Center is hosting a Valentines Day dance to help raise money for Trice and Tyler Laursen who lost their house in an early December fire in Sandstone. A dinner and silent auction will be held on February 14th starting at 4 p.m. and the dance will follow from 8 p.m. until midnight.
